Our firm was involved in many environmental-based activities in Syria, cooperating with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Syria and the Ministry of State for Environmental Affairs to research and develop the management of three protected areas around Syria.

VIA NOVA for Sustainable Development was also responsible for the preparation of the first “Ecotourism National Code” that is designed to guide all Ecotourism developments around Syria. VNSD was also involved in the creation of the first nature conservation-oriented NGO in Syria (Syrian Society for the Conservation of Wildlife (SSCW)).

BACKGROUND:
This consultancy target is to work towards the sustainable development of tourism within the protected areas in specific and the natural and forestry areas of Syria in general, enabling the legal environment of the related Ministries to adopt scientifically-based approach to assess tourism development projects and approach the utilization rights of the local community for resources management in many disputable issues.

The technical criteria and the supporting indicators for Ecotourism projects and activities
Suggest tools to ensure that Ecotourism projects and activities are supporting the nature and culture conservation efforts
Conduct consultation meetings with all related stakeholders for advice and amendments when needed

CLIENT:

BACKGROUND:

The aims of this Project is to prepare integrated management plans for three protected areas in Syria in addition to developing Ecotourism setup and strengthening human resources and enhance data and information flows for the following three PAs:

1. Al Fronloq

2. Jebel Abdul Aziz

3. Abou-Qbies

MANDATE:

  • Review all project related documents and the existingmanagement experiences;

  • Review the already achieved reports of the three PAs and prepare a detailed report on the needed and missing baseline surveys that must be accomplished in order to prepare the PAs management indicators and plans;

  • Overview the implementation of the missing baseline surveys and mainstream it to the benefit of the PAs management indicators and plans;

  • Assist the PMU and the three Protected Areas (PAs)staff in preparing the zoning plan of each of the three PAs according to the outcomes of the baseline surveys;

  • Prepare Protected Areas Management Plans for the three PAs according to the outcomes of the baseline surveys;

  • Undertake programmes to develop and strengthen demonstration sites human capacities towards more effective management;

  • Prepare Ecotourism and Business development schemes of the three PAs.
